Angelina Jolie and 1920’s Fashion
Angelina has worn some great costumes during the first two weeks of The Changeling, I wanted to learn a little bit more about 1920’s fashion as it relates to her costumes. Looks like the wardrobe department and historical consultants are doing a great job.
Androgynous Silhouettes
After WWI, women’s clothing became more manish though the extreme silhouette of the 20’s didn’t become popular until 1925. Breasts were suppressed and dresses were loose and shapeless. Larger breasted women bandaged their breast to obtain the look. I wonder if Angie had to do that.
Click it to see what else I learned.
Hair
Short hair was all the rage. Only very conservative and older women kept their hair long. At first, shorter hair was shocking because a woman’s hair was considered her crowning glory.
Short skirts?
Many people assume that very short skirts were suddenly all the rage during the 20’s but the knee was only shown from the 1926-1928. The Changeling is probably going to be set during 1928 so Angelina’s the skirt length is perfect
Coats are a Wrap
Fashionable coats wrapped to one side. They fastened with huge buttons or tab-buckle closers. Many coats had shawl fur collars.
Cloche Hats
Cloche hats let the world know that you had fashionably short hair. The hat covered a woman’s eyes and required her to hold her head at a particular angle. As a result, foreheads were unfashionable during the 20’s. Cloche is the French word for bell which is what the hat is shaped like.
Maryjanes
Maryjane’s were the shoe of choice for the fashionable woman. Shoe styles were heavily influenced by dances like the Charleston which called for a securely fastened closed toe shoe. You certainly didn’t want your shoe flying off in in the middle of the dance floor.
Bare is Better
Previously women had worn only black stockings. With the advent of the shorter skirt, women began to wear flesh colored stockings. Arms were also bared for day and evening.
Fashion icons of the day were Josephine Baker and CoCo Chanel. I think Angelina is doing them proud.
