Angelina Receives Outstanding Performance Award
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced yesterday that Angie will be honored with the festival’s Outstanding Performance of the Year Award for her work in A Mighty Heart. Angie delivered a breathtaking performance as Marianne Pearl, wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl.
We are honored to celebrate Ms. Jolie in what is arguably one of the most extraordinary female roles of the year,ā? Festival executive director Roger Durling said in a statement.
There was a lot of controversy when Angelina was give this role because she was not a woman of color. One of the former authors of this blog even voiced concern. Marianne is of Afro-Latino-Cuban and her skin tone is a light caramel color. As a person of color, I was concerned about the casting(despite my love for Angelina) but she pulled it off beautifully(no weird makeup tricks).
My fears were further waylaid when I learned that Marianne specifically wanted Angelina to play her.
In the film, Jolie portrays her friend, Mariane Pearl, during the two-week period between when her husband, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was kidnapped and when he was murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002. The movie is based on Mariane Pearlās memoir.
Angelina will be honored on February 2, 2008. Past recipients include Kate Winslet, Heath Ledger, and Helen Mirren. She’s definately in good company and some are suggesting this may be the start of an Oscar race.
The timing of the announcement and DVD release appear perfectly poised to kick-start a campaign to put Jolie in the Oscar race for best actress.
Congratulations to Angelina on her latest award.

Actually Marianne Pearl is also half Caucasian - one of her parents is Dutch. So she is as much African as white. I never understood why people objected and were calling her black.
By I guess living in Europe we don’t pay much attention to that - people’s race seems to be a very big deal in America though.

Especially that this role had nothing to do with the character’s race. It was about a wife searching for her husband - an emotion crossing all cultures and races…

GOOD FOR HER!!! I REALLY HATE THAT THE MOVIE DIDN’T DO WELL.. I THINK PEOPLE REALLY DON’T WANT TO SEE THE REALITY OF WHAT HAPPENED.. I REALLY DON’T THINK IT HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH HER PLAYING A BI-RACIAL WOMAN.

Kat,
I think it’s a nice thought that people in Europe aren’t concerned about race but I don’t think it’s true. I don’t live in Europe but I’ve spent enough time there to know that race is still very much and issue.
I’m guessing you are Caucasian or at least Caucasian looking which offers a very different view of the world.
Racial incidents, are still a huge problem throughout Europe(ask anyone of Middle Eastern descent).
Marianne actually isn’t half white. She’s more like a quarter-if that much. Her father was part Chinese.
She’s considered Black because that’s what she looks like. Is that right? I’m not sure but it’s a fact. When being discriminated against people don’t stop and ask what your racial make up is. They make and assumption based on what you look like(there are of course issues associated with last names)
The issue with Angelina being offered the part had to do with the lack of good roles for Black women in film. It was a great part and people wanted to see a woman of color playing a woman of color.
That being said, Angelina did a wonderful job and the filmakers didn’t do anything silly with the make-which was another huge concern.
