Angelina completed her first post-twins UNHCR trip yesterday.  She visited Afghan citizens who’d returned home from neighboring countries like Pakistan.

During her trip, Ms. Jolie visited recent returnees in the eastern province of Nangarhar, where almost 20 per cent of all Afghans who return to the homeland have settled since 2002.

Refugees told Angelina that they are not able to return to their homes of origins because of poor security and lack of land. People who have are still in their home country but are not able to return to their original city and state are classified as internal refugees.

Angelina was impressed with the “the courage, resilience and quiet dignity of returnee families rebuilding their lives against the kind of adversity few of us can imagine shows the human spirit at its best.” She encouraged more international age fore resettling Afghanis.

As always,  kudos to Angelina.

I’d originally thought that this would be an entire kite designed by Angie but the signed piece will certainly thrill any fan. Starting December 5th you’ll be able to bid on a Angelina designed kite. The Afghan kite, which will be sold on Ebay, will launch  “Participant Productions. The social action campaign will coincide with the delayed release of new Afghan movie The Kite Runner.” Proceeds will go to benefit Afghanistan Relief Organization (AFO) which helps raise funds for teacher training and the construction of rural libraries in Afghanistan.

The plot of the movie follows that of the novel. In abstract, it tells the story of Amir, a well-to-do boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, who is haunted by the guilt of betraying his childhood friend Hassan, the son of his father’s Hazara servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the Taliban regime.

The auction also includes a trip to the set of the new James Bond film, lunch with The Kite Runner author Khaled Hosseini and a chance to have your name included in the Hosseini new book.  (I think KD Griffin would make a fine name for a sexy American)

Since it’s inception in 1998, ARO has distributed food, medicine, hygiene supplies, school supplies, blanket and clothing.  They now “provide education to over 800 youth and adult students.”
