Angelina Jolie Watch

There hasn’t been much Angelina news of late and I’ve never been one to post just for the sake of posting but we finally have some news. A few months back I reported that Angelina’s first film was being released on DVD this summer. Looks like Tuesday(the 30th) is the day. Lookin to Get Out, which starred Angie’s dad John Voight and Ann Margaret is Angie’s first big screen role. She played a  little girl who’s never met her father. The dad is played by Jon Voight. (Ironic I know.)

The film didn’t do well the first time around both the critical reception and box office were poor. “Hal was working on two other films at the time (of the movie’s release), and there was a lot of drama. Our film was handed over to other editors, and the result was a crippled movie. We were very hurt by the reception.” John Voight told the New York Post.

Voight decided to rerelease the filming after learning the director recut the film before he died in 1988.

“I was a co-writer and co-producer, so I had a lot to say about the casting… Angie was terrific, very well-prepared. I wasn’t looking for any signs whether she’d be an actress… Hal’s hand is in every single frame,” Voight added. “Finally, this is the film he intended. It’s like a message in a bottle.”

The plot focuses on two “on-the-run gamblers who hightail it to Las Vegas in an attempt to score big and avoid the thugs trying to collect on their gambling debts.”

Sounds like a fun film.

People magazine had uncovered never before seen photos of Angelina Jolie at 23 months old. The shots were taken at older brother James Haven’s 4th birthday in 1977. Family friend and photography Charles Eastman says the focus was on James but that Angelina was an “independent bundle of energy.” Angelina and James’ mom Marcheline Bertrand wrote the names of every guest on the cake and held the birthday boy up so he could blow out the candles.

“She was very demonstrative to him,” Eastman remembers. “Jamie was very happy. He’s says the photos are a testament to Marcheline’s love for her children.

These pictures are a tribute to Marcheline,” he said. “She was generous, kind and smart and devoted her life to her kids. She had great class.”

Last week the state of California filed a tax claim against Marcheline Bertrand’s estate. According to TMZ, the deficit ridden state claims Angelina’s mom owed “$43,699 in back taxes — add on $10,924.75 in penalties and $$8,304.95 in interest, for a grand total of $62,928.70.”

Marcheline Bertrand passed away in January 2007 after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Angelina and brother James Haven split their mother’s $1.2 million dollar estate between them. Marcheline also left Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh,her only grandchildren at the time of her death, $100,000 each. In a hand written attachment to her will, she claimed that ex-husband Jon Voight still owed her $180,000 in spousal support. (If Jon Voight does owe the money it would more than cover Marcheline’s back taxes.)

Considering California’s budget crisis, I’m sure lots of estates will receive back tax notices. I’m not saying that the claims aren’t legitimate but when you are in a money crunch you really look at your books to find any extra cash. I’m sure lots of speeders have been summoned to court as well. I wonder if Angelina and James will really look into the claim or just pay the money.

Angelina’s Jolie’s first film is set to hit DVD shelves this summer. Angelina’s work in Hal Ashby’s comedy Lookin to Get Out was actually cut from the 1982 release. Four-year-old Angelina appeared in the film alongside her father, Jon Voight, Ann Margaret and Burt Young. The film, with Angie’s part intact will also screen at the Sarasota Film Festival next month.

The plot centers around “two gamblers (Voight and Young) who must flee New York City after one loses a lot of money. They head for the gambling capital of the world, Las Vegas, to try to turn their luck around.”

Lee Ashby McManus, the daughter that Hal Ashby never met, thinks she’s the inspiration for Angelina’s character.

Voight told NewsBlogRadio.com, “She said, ‘I think the little girl at the end, who was played by Angelina Jolie… was me.’ I thought about it and I said, ‘It is very possible it was you.’ I remember discussions we had and it was supposed to be a little boy, and Hal wanted a little girl.”

What irony that a character based on a girl who never met her father is played by a girl who’ll become estranged from her’s.

The Daily Express is reporting that Angelina wasn’t happy with her dad’s presidential choice.  Jon Voight was a staunch McCain supporter who expressed concern that Barack Obama would “weaken America” and suggested that President-elect Obama had a socialist agenda.

The article describes Angelina as “embarrassed” by her father’s political choice. It continues by saying both Angelina and Brad were staunch supporters of Barack Obama. That’s not true. Brad was a staunch Obama supporter who even attended Mr. Obama’s election night accpetance speech. Angelina has never publicly said who she voted for.  Before the election, she said that Obama would be a good choice for her family but she hadn’t made decision.  At last week’s Kung Fu Panda DVD release she still skirted the issue of who she supported. 

I doubt this article is 100% accurate.  The writer even seems to think that Brad and Angie are legally married. It is something interesting to think about.  I doubt very seriously that our favorite couple’s politcal leaning are that far apart.

Earlier today Angie’s estranged dad Jon Voight was seen leaving New York’s Waldolf Astoria. The Jolie-Pitts are camped out at the New York landmark while Brad films Burn After Reading with George Clooney and John Malkovich.

Did Dad just happen to stop by for a beer in the hotel bar? Did he even get to see the Jolie-Pitts considering that four of the six were on a helicopter ride for a portion of the day. Did he just stop by hoping to catch up with his estranged daughter? If he missed them will he try again?

It’d be nice if Angelina can come to some understanding with her dad. If there is a reconciliation in the works I wonder if Brad had anything to do with it. Stay tuned.

Update: Voight was apparently there to see his godaughter and not Angelina.

I can imagine Jon Voight is anxiously waiting to start talking to Angelina again and meet his grandchildren.

“I have a great respect for Brad (Pitt) and I’m always there for Angie and the kids if that day comes and I hope it comes fairly soon.�?

Poor guy, I dont understand. Angelina is a such a compassionate women. Im sure she would preach the power of forgiveness to anyone else and is such a humanitarian. So why does she continue to exclude her father from her life. John Voight also had this to say:

“Of course I would love to see Angie and I would love to work with her one day, too. (But) they have so much pressure on them, these two kids. Everybody’s all over them. It would be nice to give them some breathing space and let them be.�?

But will there be a reunion? There have been a trickle of internet rhumors that Jolie and Papa Voight might reconcile. I didnt believe it true, until I read Ted Casablancas “The Awful Gossip” blog.

I asked Jolie’s estranged pops, Jon Voight, at the Tranformers premiere here in Hell-Ay if it was looking like reunion time for daughter ‘n’ daddy.

I hope so,” was Jon’s simple answer, regarding whether or not there’d be any upcoming Voight-Jolie bear hugs. Give him a call, already, Ang, and let him meet Shiloh! It’ll do more for ya than adopting a whole nunnery filled with orphans, promise.

Angelina Jolie and James Haven will split their mother’s $1.2 million dollar life insurance policy between them, per her will. In an attachment in her Marcheline’s pen, she claims she is still owed $180,000 in spousal support from her ex-husband Jon Voight. She has also left Jolie’s children: Maddox, Zahara, and Shiloh $100,000 each. You would think by now that Jon would pay up.

James Haven told the Daily Mail that he believes Angelina is helping people because of their father’s actions while they were growing up. What I can’t figure out is how one plays into the other. What do you think? Are they connected?

The newest claim from the National Ledger is that Angelina Jolie may be trying to reunite with her father Jon Voight, and may have used Valentines day as a conduit to do just that.

None of us knows what’s really happened between them to make her not speak to her father, but if it’s something that can be forgiven and worked through (realizing that some things are unforgivable and can’t be worked through) I hope that they are able to do just that.

Brad Pitt has reportedly tried everything to get his lover and the mother of his children Angelina Jolie to get back in touch with her estranged father Jon Voight. According to a report from Star Magazine when Shiloh was born last year Brad even sent photos of the baby to Jon. According to that report, Jolie was not pleased.

A inside source told the weekly entertainment magazine that “she read [Brad] the riot act�? and said it was “a complete betrayal on his part.�? The report claimed that Brad wished to rebuild Angelina’s relationship with her father because he has such a positive relationship with his own family: Angelina is claimed to have replied that he should “deal with his own family and leave hers alone or it will be the end of them.�?

Now that Angelina has lost her mother will she use Valentine’s Day to reach out to her estranged father? The pair fell out in 2002 when Jon told Access Hollywood that he thought Angelina needed to “get help�? for “serious mental problems�?.

Jon has expressed interest in being involved again with Angie as her father and wishes to be a grandfather to her three children as well. Now is Angelina willing? A source tells life & Style Weekly that Angelina now wants her kids to know their grandfather.

“Angie feels it might be time to re-establish the relationship,” the friend tells the magazine. That would be fine with grandpa. He said in an interview lat year, “I certainly would have thought that we would have returned to love [and] been able to express our love and devotion to each other before this, but it’ll be around the corner, I’m sure of it.”

For the kids sake - it is likely time.
